Governor Jan Brewer getting ready to fire the chairwoman of the Independent Redistricting Commission– Again!

One smackdown from the State Supreme Court will not stop this hideous politician from grabbing more power for herself and her GOP clowns. Nothing like a good redistricting to dilute minorities’ voting power.

Gov. Jan Brewer may make another attempt as early as this coming week to fire the chairwoman of the Independent Redistricting Commission.

The governor said Friday her attorneys are studying the brief order issued late Thursday by the Arizona Supreme Court voiding the governor’s Nov. 1 decision to fire Colleen Mathis. She said all options are on the table – including recrafting the letter she sent to Mathis firing her in a way that might pass court muster.

And Brewer said she also is weighing whether to ask the high court for a restraining order to block the commission from giving final approval to its draft maps – the ones she and other Republicans find objectionable – while she considers what to do next.

But the gods must be smiling upon the good people of Arizona.  According to Arizona Central, this fiasco has hurt Brewer’s approval with voters.

A new poll suggests that Gov. Jan Brewer’s job approval ratings have plummeted since she took the unprecedented step of removing the chairwoman of the state’s Independent Redistricting Commission.

The poll, conducted by North Carolina-based Public Policy Polling, indicates that many Arizona voters disagree with Brewer’s decision to oust Colleen Coyle Mathis from the redistricting panel.

The poll indicates that 42 percent of respondents approve of Brewer’s job performance, while 49 percent disapprove. Nine percent said they were “not sure” whether they approved or disapproved.

The last time Brewer had job approval ratings in that range was April 2010, shortly before signing Senate Bill 1070.

A Public Policy Polling survey at that time indicated she had job approval ratings of 35 percent and disapproval ratings of 46 percent.

After she signed the tough immigration law, polls indicated that her popularity and job approval had skyrocketed – with 56 or 57 percent of Arizonans approving of her performance as governor.

The new poll also found that 31 percent of those surveyed said they approve of Brewer’s decision to “impeach” Mathis as chairwoman of the redistricting commission, while 43 percent opposed it. Twenty-six percent of respondents said they were “not sure.”

Despite the apparent dissatisfaction with Brewer’s decision to remove Mathis, there doesn’t appear to be too much support for ousting the governor from office.

Thirty-two percent of respondents said they would support a recall of Brewer; 58 percent oppose such a move, and 10 percent said they were “not sure.”

On Wednesday afternoon, the Governor’s Office disputed any linkage between the redistricting brouhaha and the drop in Brewer’s approval ratings, noting the change was more likely caused by ongoing dissatisfaction with the nation’s ecomony.

“This economic climate is impacting the approval of elected public officials…in every state and the country, and Arizona is no exception,” Brewer spokesman Matthew Benson said. “The economy and unemployment rate in Arizona and nationwide is something that affects everybody.

“The issue of redistricting is of hyper-concern to a relatively small number of people.”

The telephone poll was conducted between Nov. 17 and Nov. 20, and surveyed 500 Arizona voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.

And in typical Republican fashion (denying facts), Brewer is blaming the economy for her approval ratings.  It must be so nice to live on Fantasy Island.
